The
Project was rewarded for its continued developments in the field
of training during Adult Learners Week. In May 2001 we won the National
NIACE (National Institute for Adult Continuing Education)
'Training For Success' New Learning Opportunities Award,
which is co-sponsored by the former DFEE (Department for Education
and Employment) and the City & Guilds.
City & Guilds are quoted as saying 'The
Furniture Recycling Project in Gloucester demonstrates the effect
that quality training can have on individuals progressing into employment
or further training. The figures quoted by the Project make excellent
reading! We also appreciate the impact of training on confidence
and self-esteem and the pride enjoyed in succeeding'. They added
' The Project provides not only an excellent range of training
and development opportunities, but also a valuable service to the
community'.
The Project was rewarded for a second time during
Adult Learners Week, receiving a Group Learners Award for its work
with individuals with Learning Disabilities. The success of this
group proves that there are opportunities for many more individuals
to develop and take a fuller part in today's society, rather than
remaining within a 'sheltered' environment.
We
concluded the year by receiving the Investors in People Award. This
is recognition of the Project's commitment to the development
of the organisation by 'improving performance through people'. Our
thanks go to the Business Link team who provided the support and
guidance to enable us to achieve this award.
The assessor said, "I found the Project
to be a positive, encouraging and mutually supportive environment
for staff, volunteers and adults with learning disabilities".
He added, "Staff, volunteers and adults
with learning disabilities felt valued, developed and part of a
team, which meets the needs of disadvantaged people within the community'.
Finally,
the Project also won the Whitbread Volunteer Action Award 2000
for the South West and is now held as an example of good practice
within its field. It has provided advice to many new projects in
other areas and we have also been involved in discussions with Members
of Parliament about further opportunities to recycle domestic products.
